Date: [1-15-2026] -- October, 2014
Location: Chinatown, Chicago at the Kakusareta Himitsu — The Hidden Secret Teashop
Player Characters Present: Ken [Brad], Sarah Sawara [Andrew K]
Open Spots: 0
NPCs Present: Himu, the teahouse owner

Current Scenario: The two have seen eachother at the tea shop a few times, and finally recognized one another from the familiar of Tokyo.

Suggested Dice Pools: perception, knowledge for background, social for impression or answers

End Trigger: Completed encounter

Opener: The smell of roasted oolong and sandalwood fills the narrow shop long before you reach the door. Lanterns hang from the low ceiling, their light warm and honeyed against shelves of glass jars labeled in careful brushstrokes. Steam curls lazily from a half-dozen kettles behind the counter, where Himu, the owner, moves with deliberate calm — a man who learned long ago to survive by never rushing.

He’s in his fifties now, balding, his old irezumi fading to pale ghosts beneath rolled sleeves. The tattoos tell stories he no longer speaks of — his Yakuza days are something he claims to have left behind in Japan, along with his wife and the years the prison took from him. America, for Himu, is penance and rebirth.

His shop, Kakusareta Himitsu — The Hidden Secret — is tucked between a dumpling house and a trinket store that sells cheap imports and plastic dragons. From the street, it looks like a hole in the wall; inside, it’s something else.

There’s a low bar in the back lined with Japanese whiskies, sake, and, incongruously, bottles of Johnny Walker. The kitchen is little more than a microwave and a row of kettles, but the food arrives hot and fresh from neighboring kitchens, delivered by some quiet understanding between restaurateurs of the district.

The clientele is stranger still.

Mages. Vampires. The occasional ghoul or hedge-born wanderer. People who prefer their business to remain unspoken. Himu never blinks, never asks questions, and never forgets an order. He has a reputation for making tonics and ointments that actually work — salves against pain, against sunlight, against the hunger that creeps too close to the surface. Whatever his sources, no one questions them.

Tonight, the shop is quiet. Rain traces silver veins down the window. The city hums beyond the glass, but in here, the sound is hushed — a perfect cover for Sawano to make her regular report.

She always takes the same table — middle of the room, close enough to hear everything, far enough to see everyone. The small paper cranes she folds while she works are scattered across the table, some neat, most awkwardly creased. It’s a habit that makes her look harmless, almost human.

But this place isn’t about peace. It’s about control.

The family expects messages — regular ones. Every visit has two purposes:

To ensure that if something happens to Sawano, she doesn’t vanish with secrets and intel buried with her.

To confirm that she’s still alive, because following a Mehket is never easy.

Himu handles the logistics with his usual discretion. He has a secure line hidden somewhere in the shop — how exactly, Sawano has never asked, and he’s never volunteered. Her updates go through him, encoded and layered, delivered to their destinations in Tokyo and Kyoto under the guise of polite cultural exchanges.

The method is reliable. The shop is neutral ground. Until recently.

Because lately, someone else has been here — a man who watches her every visit.

He sits near the back, always with a book or a cup of matcha. Young-looking, Japanese, clean-cut — handsome in a familiar way that gnaws at memory, but never resolves into recognition. His posture is relaxed, but his eyes are too still, too observant.

He’s there again tonight.

When Sawano arrives, Himu’s nod is slightly tighter than usual. He pours her tea without being asked, sets it down beside the paper and envelopes she uses for her messages, and murmurs:
“Don’t worry about him.”

Then, quieter, almost rehearsed: “He’s just another regular.”

But Sawano knows better. The old man’s tone is a warning disguised as reassurance.

The stranger looks up from his book, meeting her gaze for the first time. He smiles faintly.

The silence stretches.

Sawano sets down her half-folded crane and, without raising her voice, addresses him in Japanese — her tone calm, measured, and precise.

“Is that the case, mister? Are you someone about which I should not worry?”

The rain continues its slow tapping against the window. The stranger’s smile deepens by a fraction — not enough to be friendly.

Himu retreats behind the counter, busying himself with kettles that don’t need tending.

The Hidden Secret feels suddenly smaller.

Ken stood there a moment, studying Sarah with an unreadable calm.
“The problem with tools,” he said at last, “is that once someone’s finished using them, they get tossed aside.” A faint, humorless smile touched his lips. “I should know.”
Silence lingered between them.
“What ails Chicago isn’t the same thing that ails Japan,” he went on. “But maybe we can compare notes.”
He drifted toward Himu, extending his cup without a word. Sake streamed into it, clear and steady. Ken nodded his thanks, returned to his seat, and leaned back, cradling the warmth in his hands.
“I have some thoughts on what’s wrong with Chicago,” he said, eyes fixed on the pale surface of the drink. Then he looked up.
“But tell me—what’s ails Japan?”

Description: Sawano's polite smile switches to an amused one, "Do I enjoy being used? What an interesting question. Does a hammer enjoy hitting a nail? Of course not. A tool has no feelings on how it is used. It is an object subject to the whims of its user. It has no agency of its own, nor does it have a say on who owns it or how it is used." She tilts her head to the side, "Well, I suppose that is not entirely truthful. I have learned to cherish my usefulness to the Clan. They have made sure that I have learned that." She gives a polite laugh before moving on with the conversation.

Sawano seems interested in the story of Death Note, "A narrative addressing death and the juxtaposition between personal and collective justice. Interesting. I believe I shall have to look into this novel. Expression has changed so drastically since I was in school."

On the topic of festering wounds, Sawano spends a moment sizing Ken up before she answers, "The world is sick. As it is in this city, so too is it in Japan. We know precious little about the illness, but if we find out what caused it, we might begin to treat it. There are many of our people looking into the cause back home. I have been tasked with analyzing the cause here in hopes that someone here may know more. Does that make sense?"

Ken closes Death Note with one finger marking the page, studying her over the rim of his cup before answering.
His expression doesn’t change at the mention of the Takeda Clan — but the silence afterward is deliberate.
“The antiseptic for the wound… hm.”
A faint smile. “Then I suppose I should be careful not to bleed.”
He sets the book down fully now, giving her his attention — not confrontational, not submissive. Measured.
“You speak of yourself as a tool,” he continues in smooth, formal Tokyo Japanese. “Tools are useful. But they are also used.” A small tilt of his head. “Do you enjoy that?”
At her question about Death Note, he glances down at the cover and chuckles softly.
“It’s a story about justice. Or rather, about a man who believes he can define it.” His eyes lift back to hers. “It begins with good intentions. It rarely ends there.”
A beat.

“I was born in Tokyo,” he answers at last. “I’ve been here long enough to know that Chicago reshapes people who underestimate it.” His gaze sharpens just slightly. "We are the gaijin here after all."
He finally takes a sip of his saki.
“As for takoyaki — there is a place in Arlington Heights that comes close. The batter is wrong, but the owner tries.” A pause. “I could show you. If your… assignment allows leisure.”
His fingers tap once against the cover of the novel.

“So tell me, Sawano-san…” — the honorific is polite, intentional —
"
What wound are you here to keep from festering?"

Description: Sawano smiles warmly, slightly amused at the implication that she might be a troublemaker. Dressed in the traditional red and white garb of a Shinto shrine maiden in the middle of Chicago, it is surprising that more people do not stop and stare at her, yet any onlookers seem to just let their eyes just roll off her. "Rest assured, sir. By my very nature, I am not one who causes trouble. I am one who is sent when trouble is caused. I am the antiseptic for the wound. Well, right now, I am more focused on triage at the moment. We must figure out what kind of wound we have before we begin treatment." The Miko speaks in a very formal Japanese dialect; her words are carefully chosen and lacking in the slang and grammatical shortcuts most native speakers tend to adopt, but her accent is so perfect that it would be impossible for her to be anything but.

Sawano has a seat across from Ken when bidden, bringing along her own cup of tea as she maintains her smile, though the smile doesn't seem to reach her eyes, "I have also taken a liking to the tea here. And the location itself reminds me of home, though even Kyoto is vastly different today than from when I was growing up."

Sawano seems quite interested in the Novel/Manga Ken is consuming with the tilt of her head, "I must admit I have been rather busy in recent years, and I have not often found myself in a position to consume media. I find myself more familiar with the classics, like the Book of Five Rings, but I have been quite recently interested in experiencing more modern forms of entertainment. Would you recommend this Death Note as a good place to start?"

In response to his later query, Sawano shakes her head, "I have not been in the country long either. A month or so: no more. Before that, I was in France, I think. Or was it Italy? I often have a hard time telling these gaijin apart, to be honest. I doubt I will be in the country for much longer than is needed to handle the situation requires it. The Takeda Clan does not like lending out its tools for long." Sawano says the last sentence with a bit of gravitas before taking a long sip of tea. She looks Ken directly in the eyes as if searching for a reaction.

Description
Ken sits alone in the corner, partially hidden, reading the light novel Death Note while sipping warm sake. He listens absently to the soft hum of conversation drifting through the room.
Nearby, he overhears a woman speaking with Himu. Their voices drop, then both turn toward him. The woman studies Ken for a moment before asking,
“Is that the case, mister? Are you someone I should be worried about?”
Ken looks up from his book, unbothered. He replies in a calm, traditional Tokyo tone.
“That depends. If you’re the kind of person who starts trouble in a fine place like this, maybe. If not, there’s nothing to worry about.”
He gestures lightly toward the bar, then glances at Himu.
“I just like the tea here.”
After a brief pause, he adds,
“If you have time, sit. It’s not often I meet someone from home.”
He taps the cover of his book.
“Have you read Death Note? It’s a classic.”
Ken waits for her response, then continues casually,
“Been in Chicago long? I haven’t. Do you know anywhere that serves good takoyaki? I really miss it.”
I was born in Japan and moved here a few years ago. Your Japanese is good. Are you a transplant as well?
